The other thing that we had planned to do in Thailand was visit an elephant park. We definitely wanted to see elephants and ride them if possible, but we didn't want to go to a place that was cruel to them, forcing them to play football and act like circus animals. I looked into some conservation centers that looked amazing but sadly were way to expensive. In the end, we decided to go to Baan Chang Elephant Park, a small elephant park run by locals. They explained a lot about elephants and also provided interaction with them. We were able to feed the elephants, ride on the elephants first in the park and then on a little trek into the jungle and then bathe with them at the end. They don't use elephant chairs which hurt the elephants, instead you sit on their head or back. Riding bareback on an elephant was an amazing experience, although we both felt a little sore afterwards! We were lucky enough to ride on the mother elephant while the baby elephant (which was tethered to her) walked alongside.
L'autre projet que nous avions pour la Thaïlande consistait en la visite d'une réserve pour éléphants. On voulait vraiment voir des éléphants et, si possible, faire une ballade à dos d'éléphant mais on ne voulait pas aller dans ces parcs pour éléphants où ils sont maltraités et obligés de jouer au foot, peindre des tableaux, en bref se comporter comme des animaux de cirque. J'ai fait quelques recherches et trouvé un ou deux sanctuaires pour éléphants qui avaient l'air super mais ne rentraient malheureusement pas dans notre budget. Finalement, nous avons choisi le parc à éléphants Baan Chang, une petite réserve organisée par des thaïlandais. On a appris beaucoup de choses sur les éléphants et on a également pu passer du temps avec eux. On a pu nourrir les éléphants, se balader à dos d'éléphant dans le parc et puis dans la jungle, et se baigner avec eux. Ce parc n'utilise pas les nacelles qui s'accrochent au dos des éléphants; on s'assoit simplement sur leur nuque ou leur dos. Se balader à cru sur un éléphant est une expérience unique, même si on avait un peu mal aux fesses après! On a eu la chance de se balader sur une maman éléphant avec le bébé éléphant qui marchait à côté, attaché à la maman.
The elephants were impressive. You don't realise how big they actually are until you stand next to them and climb up onto their backs (they actually lay down to help us get on but as they are quite large this was also difficult!). The baby elephant was especially adorable as it first tried to eat everything in sight, pulling up all the tree branches and shoots it could find) and then decided to play in the water, immersing itself until only its trunk was sticking out, rolling around in the water and then getting up again with a happy cry!
Les éléphants étaient impressionnants. On ne se rend pas compte à quel point c'est énorme ces créatures-là jusqu'à ce qu'on se retrouve juste à côté et qu'on essaie de leur grimper sur le dos (en fait ils s'allongent pour qu'on puisse monter dessus mais comme ils sont bien larges c'est assez difficile!). Le bébé éléphant était particulièrement mignon. Pendant la ballade, il essayait de manger tout ce qu'il pouvait, déracinant les pousses de bambou au passage. Dans l'eau, il jouait comme un enfant en s'immergeant tout entier jusqu'à ce que seule la trompe dépasse et se roulant dans l'eau avant de se relever rapidement avec un petit cri de joie!
