Before coming to Thailand, we had booked 2 activities that we wanted to do in Chiang Mai: a Thai cooking class and a visit to an elephant park.
So, on the fourth day, we went to the Asia Scenic cooking school for a whole day of thai cooking. We arrived there around 9 and started off by a visit to their herb garden where our teacher Mem showed us the various herbs and spices used in thai cooking.
We then went to the local market to learn more about the fresh ingredients used in thai cooking.
When we came back to the cooking school, we were given a thai appetiser traditionnally used to welcome guests, meang kum. It consists of a betel leaf in which you put tiny amounts of ginger, shallots, roasted peanut, toasted coconut, chillies and lime. You then pour a little sweet syrup on the top before rolling the leaf and putting it whole in your mouth. I really liked it but most of the other students seemed to find it quite revolting!
Then we got to the cooking! We could each choose 7 dishes that we wanted to cook out of over 25 in total. Mike and I decided to choose different dishes so that we would be able to make 14 different thai foods at the end.
We started by cooking a main dish. I chose pad thai since I'm quite partial to it! Mike decided to cook pad see uw (Chinese style fried noodles).
On a commencé par le plat principal. J'ai choisi pad thai puisque j'aime bien ça! Mike a décidé d'apprendre à cuisiner le pad see uw (nouilles chinoises sautées).
Then we moved on to appetisers. I picked the glass noodle salad and Mike learnt how to make spring rolls.
Then we learnt how to make curry from scratch, using a mortar and a pestle. It was fun but I don't see myself doing all that work just to make curry. I'd rather use ready-made curry paste!
I made a Panang curry (curry with peanuts) with tofu and Mike made green curry.
Finally, we made desserts (deep-fried banana and banana in coconut milk) and a vegetable dish (stir-fried chicken with cashew nuts for Mike and stir-fried sweet and sour vegetables for me). At that point in time we were feeling rather stuffed so we took the food to go!
Overall it was a wonderful experience! We learnt how to cook a lot of different thai recipes and also how to use local ingredients (most of which are readily available in Japan). And best of all, we got to eat a lot of really good thai food!
