Mike and I had two weeks off for the New Year celebrations so we decided to visit another Asian country Thailand. We wanted to see some historical things, learn more about the Thai lifestyle and culture and relax in the sun so we tried to combine all these elements into our trip.
Mike et moi avons profité de nos deux semaines de vacances de fin d'année pour aller visiter un autre pays asiatique. Nous voulions visiter quelques sites historiques, en apprendre plus sur le mode de vie et la culture thais et se détendre au soleil alors nous avons choisi de partir en Thailande.
We landed in Bangkok late on December 23rd and went straight to our hotel which offered a free transfer from the airport (I've been using a really good website to get discounts on hotels: Agoda).

The next day we had planned to take the night bus north to Sukhothai (more on that later) which left us the whole day in Bangkok. Since our hotel was already in the outskirts of the city, we decided to take a day-trip to a place called Ancient City, which is the largest open-air museum in the world. A Thai visionary decided to duplicate the main monuments on Thailand and rebuilt them on a slightly smaller scale in a 320 hectare parc. He also built full-size or slightly scaled down models of historical sites that no longer exist and threw in some imaginary buildings based on religious mythology just for the sake of it. The final result is really impressive! We rented bikes and spent the whole day going around the park gawking at the structures.
Le lendemain nous avions prévu de prendre le bus de nuit de Bangkok à Sukhothai (péripéties à suivre dans un autre article) et avions donc la journée de libre. Notre hôtel se trouvant un peu à l'extérieur de Bangkok, nous avons décidé d'aller visiter un endroit appelé Ancient City (cité ancienne), qui est considéré comme le plus grand musée à l'air libre du monde. Un thaïlandais visionnaire a fait reproduire les principaux monuments de Thailande à échelle légèrement réduite dans un parc de 320 hectares. Il a aussi fait construire (grandeur nature où à échelle légèrement réduite) des sites historiques à présent détruits et quelques bâtiments imaginés à partir de la mythologie religieuse hindoue et bouddhiste. Le résultat final est impressionnant! Nous avons loué des vélos et passé la journée entière à faire le tour du parc en admirant les bâtiments.
We had lunch at the parc's floating market. I chose phad thai, my favourite thai dish!
Nous avons déjeuné dans le marché flottant du parc. J'ai commandé phad thai, mon plat thaïlandais préféré!
They had an animal enclosure inside the parcs with some eagles, a lot of deer and one very large snake (in a cage, thankfully!)
A l'intérieur du parc il y avait un enclos contenant quelques aigles, beaucoup de biches et un grand serpent (dans une cage, heureusement!)
